The Hidden Cost: Format Validation Quota

Headline pricing does not tell the whole story. Two of the four providers charge your monthly quota for every API call — including calls that fail because the user typed a malformed VAT number. In a checkout flow that validates on-blur (as the user types), a single field completion can generate 3–6 quota-consuming calls before a valid number is entered.

TaxID validates the number format locally before making any network call. A format error returns instantly with no quota consumed. Lookuptax has the same behaviour. Vatstack and Vatlayer consume quota on every call, including format rejections.

At 10,000 validations per month with a 20% format-error rate, the effective quota consumption difference is ~2,000 calls. On Vatstack's Starter plan that caps at 1,000 calls per month, this difference alone can push you to the next tier.

When VIES Is Down: A Pricing Risk

Vatlayer does not distinguish between an invalid VAT number and a VIES service outage. Both return valid: false. If you build on this behaviour and encounter a VIES downtime event, you will either block legitimate customers or silently zero-rate unverified numbers — neither of which is the correct compliance posture. The other three providers return explicit service_unavailable status codes that let you handle the two cases differently.

Choosing Based on Your Use Case

For EU-only SaaS checkout under 100,000 validations/month: TaxID offers the best combination of price, status code granularity, and company data.

For global validation beyond EU+UK: Lookuptax covers 50+ countries but is priced at a premium. TaxID covers 31 countries including AU, NO, and CH.

For async webhook workflows: Vatstack and Lookuptax both support webhooks. TaxID is synchronous only — if you need push-based notification when a VAT status changes, Vatstack is the better fit for now.
