Swedish VAT Number Checker
A Swedish VAT number (momsregistreringsnummer) is built from the ten-digit organisation number: drop the hyphen, put SE in front and 01 at the end. Organisation number 556123-4567 becomes SE556123456701.
Sending the organisation number on its own is the most common reason a Swedish check fails.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Sweden tax authority.

SE plus twelve digits, always ending in 01. Sole traders use their personal identity number in place of the organisation number.
How this Sweden check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Sweden pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Sending the ten-digit organisation number
556123-4567 is a register number. Add SE and 01 to get the VAT number.
Dropping the 01
SE5561234567 has only ten digits after the prefix and fails the format check. The trailing 01 is required.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn an organisationsnummer into a VAT number?
Remove the hyphen, add SE in front and 01 at the end: 556123-4567 → SE556123456701.
What is a momsnummer?
Moms is the Swedish word for VAT, so the momsnummer is the VAT number.
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
