Bulgarian VAT Number Checker
A Bulgarian VAT number is BG followed by nine or ten digits. Companies use their nine-digit UIC (EIK/BULSTAT code) from the Commercial Register; individuals registered for VAT use a ten-digit number.
The local name is written in Cyrillic — идентификационен номер по ЗДДС — but the EU VAT number always uses the Latin prefix BG.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Bulgaria tax authority.

How this Bulgaria check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Bulgaria pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Treating the EIK as proof of VAT registration
Every Bulgarian company has an EIK, but VAT registration is separate. A company below the registration threshold has a valid EIK and an invalid VAT number at the same time.
Typing the prefix in Cyrillic
A Cyrillic В and Г look like Latin B and G but are different characters. A number copied from a Cyrillic document can fail for that reason alone — retype the prefix.
Frequently asked questions
Why are some Bulgarian VAT numbers ten digits long?
Companies use their nine-digit UIC. Individuals registered for VAT use a ten-digit number, so both lengths are valid.
Is the Bulgarian VAT number the same as the EIK?
For a company, the digits are the same: the VAT number is BG plus the EIK. It is only active in VIES once the company is registered for VAT.
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; only the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
