Lithuanian VAT Number Checker
A Lithuanian VAT number is the PVM mokėtojo kodas: LT followed by nine digits for legal entities, or twelve digits for individuals and some temporary registrations.
Lithuanian companies also have a nine-digit company code (juridinio asmens kodas). It is a different number with the same length, so a wrong number cannot be spotted by counting digits.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Lithuania tax authority.

How this Lithuania check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Lithuania pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Sending the company code
The company code and the VAT code are both nine digits but are not the same number. If a Lithuanian company's number fails, ask for the PVM mokėtojo kodas specifically.
Assuming a company code means VAT registration
Companies below the registration threshold have a company code and no VAT code.
Frequently asked questions
What does PVM mean?
PVM (pridėtinės vertės mokestis) is the Lithuanian name for VAT. The PVM mokėtojo kodas is the VAT payer code.
Why are some Lithuanian VAT numbers twelve digits?
Individuals registered for VAT, and some temporary registrations, receive twelve-digit codes. Companies use nine.
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
