Hungarian VAT Number Checker
A Hungarian business has an eleven-digit tax number (adószám), written 12345678-1-23. The EU VAT number uses only the first eight digits: HU12345678.
Pasting the full domestic tax number is the most common way a Hungarian check fails.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Hungary tax authority.

HU plus eight digits. In the domestic adószám, the ninth digit is a VAT code and the last two identify the regional tax directorate; neither belongs in the EU VAT number.
How this Hungary check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Hungary pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Sending the full eleven-digit adószám
12345678-1-23 is the domestic tax number. Keep the first eight digits and add HU.
Assuming an adószám means EU VAT registration
Hungarian businesses that only trade domestically, or are exempt, can have a tax number without an EU VAT number in VIES.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get the EU VAT number from an adószám?
Take the first eight digits and put HU in front: 12345678-1-23 → HU12345678.
What do the other three digits mean?
The ninth digit is a VAT status code and the last two identify the tax directorate. They are used in Hungary only.
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
