Danish VAT Number Checker
A Danish VAT number is the company's CVR number with DK in front: DK followed by eight digits. The CVR is the Central Business Register number, and the same eight digits identify the business for VAT (moms).
Danish companies also have P-numbers for each physical location. Those are ten digits long and are not VAT numbers.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Denmark tax authority.
Denmark VAT number format
- Local name
- Moms-nummer / CVR-nummer
- Structure
- DK + 8 digits
- Format example
- DK12345678Illustrative: right shape, not a registered business.
- Standard rate
- 25%
DK plus eight digits. Danish documents sometimes write the number in pairs — DK 12 34 56 78 — and spaces are stripped before the check.
How this Denmark check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Denmark pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Sending a P-number
A P-number (produktionsenhedsnummer) identifies a workplace, not the company, and has ten digits. It fails the format check; ask for the CVR number.
Assuming a CVR means VAT registration
Every Danish business has a CVR number, but small businesses below the registration threshold are not registered for moms. Their CVR is real and their VAT number is invalid.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Danish VAT number the same as the CVR number?
The digits are the same. The VAT number is DK plus the CVR, and it is active in VIES only while the business is registered for VAT.
What is a moms-nummer?
Moms is the Danish word for VAT, so a moms-nummer is the VAT number — DK plus the CVR.
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
