Estonian VAT Number Checker
An Estonian VAT number is the KMKR number (käibemaksukohustuslase registreerimise number): EE followed by nine digits.
Estonian companies are also identified by an eight-digit registry code (registrikood). It is the number people quote most, and it is not the VAT number — the two share no fixed relationship.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Estonia tax authority.
Estonia VAT number format
- Local name
- KMKR (Käibemaksukohustuslase registreerimise number)
- Structure
- EE + 9 digits
- Format example
- EE123456789Illustrative: right shape, not a registered business.
- Standard rate
- 22% · reduced 9%
EE plus nine digits. An eight-digit number is almost always the registry code, not the KMKR.
How this Estonia check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Estonia pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Sending the registry code
The registrikood has eight digits and is printed on everything from websites to e-Residency company pages. It fails the format check here; ask for the KMKR number.
Assuming an e-Residency company is VAT registered
Many Estonian companies run by e-residents are not registered for VAT. They have a registry code and no KMKR number at all.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the registrikood and the KMKR number?
The registrikood identifies the company in the Business Register and has eight digits. The KMKR number is its VAT number and has nine. Only the KMKR is in VIES.
Does every Estonian company have a VAT number?
No. Registration is required above a turnover threshold and optional below it, so many small companies have none.
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
