Luxembourg VAT Number Checker
A Luxembourg VAT number is LU followed by eight digits, issued by the indirect tax authority (AED).
Luxembourg companies carry several identifiers — a trade register number (RCS, B followed by digits) and a national identification number (matricule) — and only the LU number is in VIES.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Luxembourg tax authority.

How this Luxembourg check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Luxembourg pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Sending the RCS number
RCS numbers look like B123456 and identify a company in the trade register. They are not VAT numbers and fail the format check.
Sending the matricule
The matricule has eleven or thirteen digits and is a national ID. If a Luxembourg number is longer than eight digits, it is not the VAT number.
Frequently asked questions
Is the RCS number a VAT number?
No. The RCS number is the company's trade register entry. The VAT number is a separate LU + 8 digits identifier.
Who issues Luxembourg VAT numbers?
The Administration de l'enregistrement, des domaines et de la TVA (AED).
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
