Norwegian VAT Number Checker
A Norwegian VAT number is the nine-digit organisation number with NO in front and MVA after it: NO 123 456 789 MVA. Norway is outside the EU, so VIES does not cover it.
This checker asks the Brønnøysund Register Centre (Brønnøysundregistrene) directly, and reports whether the organisation is in the VAT register — not only whether it exists.
Checked live against the Brønnøysund Register Centre (Brønnøysundregistrene). Not affiliated with the Norway tax authority.
Norway VAT number format
- Local name
- MVA-nummer (Merverdiavgiftsnummer)
- Structure
- NO + 9 digits + MVA
- Format example
- NO123456785MVAIllustrative: right shape and check digit, not a registered business.
- Standard rate
- 25% · reduced 15%, 12%
NO plus nine digits plus MVA. The ninth digit is a modulus-11 check digit, verified here before anything is sent. The prefix and suffix are optional when you paste.
How this Norway check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Norway pattern and its check digit is recomputed. This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in the Brønnøysund Register Centre (Brønnøysundregistrene), which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Treating an organisation number as a VAT number
Every Norwegian entity has an organisation number. Only those in the VAT register (Merverdiavgiftsregisteret) can use MVA after it.
Checking a Norwegian number in VIES
VIES covers EU member states only. A VIES tool cannot tell you anything about a Norwegian number.
Frequently asked questions
What does MVA mean?
MVA (merverdiavgift) is the Norwegian name for VAT. Writing MVA after the organisation number shows the business is VAT registered.
Where does this checker get Norwegian data?
From the Brønnøysund Register Centre's public API, which publishes the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities and the VAT registration flag.
Is the check digit enough?
No. A correct check digit only means the number could exist. The register lookup tells you whether it is VAT registered today.
