Slovak VAT Number Checker
Slovak businesses have three identifiers, and they are easy to mix up: the IČO (eight-digit business ID), the DIČ (ten-digit tax ID) and the IČ DPH, the VAT number. Only the IČ DPH is in VIES.
The IČ DPH is SK followed by ten digits — usually the same digits as the DIČ. A business with a DIČ but no VAT registration has no IČ DPH.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System. Not affiliated with the European Commission or the Slovakia tax authority.

SK plus ten digits. The number must also pass a modulo-11 check, which VIES applies.
How this Slovakia check works
- Format, in your browser. As you type, the number is compared with the Slovakia pattern (prefix, length and characters). This costs nothing and sends nothing: a number in the wrong shape is rejected on the spot and never reaches the registry.
- Registration, live. A well-formed number is then looked up in VIES, the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System, which says whether it is registered today and, where the register publishes them, the business name and address. Free checks are limited per visitor per hour so the registry is not scraped through this page.
- More checks, or from your code. A free account gives you an API key with 100 validations a month, the same answer as this page as JSON.
What usually goes wrong
Sending the IČO
The eight-digit IČO identifies the business in the registers. It fails the format check here; ask for the IČ DPH.
Adding SK to a DIČ
Prefixing a DIČ with SK only gives a VAT number if the business is registered for VAT. Otherwise VIES reports it as invalid.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between DIČ and IČ DPH?
The DIČ is a tax ID every taxpayer has. The IČ DPH is the VAT number, issued only on VAT registration. They usually share digits, but only the IČ DPH is valid for intra-EU trade.
What does DPH mean?
DPH (daň z pridanej hodnoty) is the Slovak name for VAT.
Is checking the format enough?
No. The format check catches typos; the VIES lookup tells you whether the number is registered today.
